    1. The common European viper, a brown, olive or greyish snake with a dark zigzag line running down its back. It is the only poisonous snake found in the UK, but is seldom fatal to humans.
Etymology: Anglo-Saxon nædre; around the 14c the old form a nadder became understood to be an adder.
