    1. A hormone secreted by the adrenal glands in response to fear, excitement or anger, which causes an increase in heartbeat and blood pressure and diverts blood away from the intestines and towards the muscles.
    2. This hormone produced synthetically, used to reduce blood loss during surgery, and to treat asthma.
Etymology: Early 20c: adrenal + -ine2.
