    1. Any of various deciduous trees and shrubs with dark greyish-brown fissured bark, oval or rounded leaves with toothed margins, and male and female flowers in catkins on separate plants.
    2. The timber of this tree, which is resistant to underwater rot and is used to make bridges and piles.
