    1. Any of various species of plant that produce spikes of small brightly coloured flowers, eg love-lies-bleeding.
    2. A dark red dye obtained from the flowers of this plant, or manufactured artificially, used as a food colouring.

      A fabled flower that never fades, and is regarded as a symbol of immortality.
