    1. Any member of a class of organic compounds that contain the CONH2 group, formed when one or more of the hydrogen atoms of ammonia is replaced by an acyl group.
    2. Any member of a class of inorganic compounds that contain the NH2- ion, formed when one of the hydrogen atoms of ammonia is replaced by a metal.
Etymology: 19c: from ammonia + -ide.
