    1. Any of various potentially addictive synthetic drugs, formerly used as appetite suppressants to treat obesity, now seldom prescribed but often used illegally to produce a sense of well-being and mental alertness. Also (slang) called speed.
Etymology: 1930s: from the chemical name alphamethylphenethylamine.
