      A bright spiral galaxy in the constellation Andromeda, about 2.2m light years away from Earth, the largest of the nearby galaxies, the nearest to the Milky Way and the most distant object visible to the naked eye.
Etymology: 18c: named after Andromeda who, in Greek mythology, was the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia.
