    1. Severe pain behind the chest-bone, often spreading to the left shoulder and arm, usually induced by insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle during exertion, which is commonly caused by thickening of the artery walls. Also called angina pectoris.
    2. Inflammation of the throat.
Etymology: 18c in sense 1; 16c in sense 2: from Latin angina a throat disease, from angere to choke.
