    1. An event or circumstance which precedes another.
      Thesaurus: ancestors, descent, lineage, ancestry, forebears, forefathers, extraction, pedigree, stock, blood, background, progenitors.
    2. grammar.
      A word or phrase that some other word, usually a relative pronoun, relates to, eg in the man who came to dinner, who is a relative pronoun and its antecedent is the man. See also anaphora
    3. logic.
      The hypothetical or conditional proposition that a premiss depends on.
    4a. Someone's past history;
      Form: antecedents (usually)
    4b. Someone's ancestry.
      Form: antecedents (usually)
