    1. phonetics.
      The omission of a sound or syllable (or sometimes more than one) at the beginning of a word, eg telephone becomes phone, where the missing element is sometimes suggested by an apostrophe as in 'gator for alligator. Compare aphesis, apocope.
Etymology: 17c: from Greek aphairein to remove.
