artesian well
noun
    1. geol.
      A deep well that is drilled into an aquifer in an artesian basin, so that the water trapped there under pressure is forced to flow upward in the well, often used as a source of drinking water.
Etymology: 19c: named after Arteis (now called Artois), an old province in France where it was common to draw water by this method.
