      In green plants and certain bacteria: the manufacture of complex organic compounds from simple molecules obtained from the environment.

      In animals: the manufacture of complex organic compounds, such as proteins and fats, from simple molecules derived from digested food material.

      The process whereby a sound is assimilated (sense 4).
