- 1. In the UK (apart from Scotland where the equivalent post is held by the Lord Advocate): the principal law officer and chief legal counsel to the Crown, who also holds a ministerial position (although not a cabinet one) and a seat in the House of Commons.
2. In other countries, eg US, Australia, New Zealand, etc: the chief law officer or chief government law officer.
3. In some US states: another term for a public prosecutor.
