    1. medicine.
      A poisonous alkaloid drug, obtained from deadly nightshade, which is used as a premedication before general anaesthesia, as a treatment for peptic ulcers, and for dilating the pupil during eye examinations. Also called belladonna.
Etymology: 1830s: from Atropos the name of the Fate who, in Greek mythology, cut the thread of life.
