    1. A dog bred for exceptional ferocity, usually a cross between an American pit bull terrier and a mastiff, rottweiler or Rhodesian ridgeback.
    2. An aggressive dog kept chained or tied up.
Etymology: 15c as band-dogge in sense 2: from band1 in the old sense ‘chain' or ‘strap'.
