    1. To dip or immerse someone in, or sprinkle them with, water as a sign of them having become a member of the Christian Church (in the case of babies, this is usually accompanied by name-giving).
    2. To give a name to someone. Compare christen (sense 1).
      Example: He was baptized Harold
