    1. A cereal of the grass family which bears a dense head of grains with long slender awns (sense1), and is an important crop in north temperate regions because it is relatively tolerant of low temperatures and poor soil.
    2. The grain of this plant, used as feed for animal livestock and, when partially germinated, also used in the brewing of beer and the production of whisky.
