    1. A wild black-and-white goose of N Europe. Often shortened to barnacle.
Etymology: 13c: as bernekke: the bird was believed to hatch from the goose-necked barnacle, a type of limpet found attached to floating timbers, and from which feathery clouds were seen protruding into the water.
