    1. deadly nightshade.
    2. Any of various toxic alkaloid compounds, used medicinally, obtained from the deadly nightshade plant, eg atropine.
Etymology: 16c: from Italian bella donna beautiful lady; so called because ladies once used the drug cosmetically to enlarge the pupils of their eyes, and so enhance their beauty.
