    1. biol.
      A thick yellowish-green alkaline liquid produced by the liver, stored by the gall bladder and secreted into the duodenum, where it plays a major role in the digestion of fats.
    2. literary
      Anger, irritability or bad temper. See also bilious.
Etymology: 17c: from Latin bilis; in early physiology, an excess of yellow bile in the body was thought to produce irritability.
