bogey2
noun bogeys
    1. A score of one over par on a specific hole.
    2. formerly

verb
    bogeyed, bogeying
    1. To complete (a specified hole) in one over par. Compare birdie 2, eagle 2, 3.
Etymology: 19c: in 1890 a Major Wellman is said to have remarked that the hypothetical golfer able to play to this standard must be a regular ‘Bogey Man' (referring to a popular song of the time); thereafter this imaginary player came to be called Colonel Bogey and golfers would aim to ‘beat the Colonel' or ‘beat the Bogey'; see bogeyman.
