noun bonsai (plural)
    1. The ancient Japanese art of cultivating artificially miniaturized trees in small containers, by pruning the roots and shoots regularly and using wires to bend the branches to the desired shape.
    2. A miniature tree cultivated in this way, eg pine, Japanese maple, cherry.
Etymology: 1920s: Japanese, from bon tray or bowl + sai cultivation.
