    1. A colourless crystalline salt or white greasy powder, found in saline lake deposits, used in the manufacture of enamels, ceramics and heat-resistant glass, and as a cleaning agent, mild antiseptic, astringent and source of boric acid. Also called sodium borate.
Etymology: 14c as boras: from Latin borax, ultimately from Persian burah.
