Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales; United Kingdom is a political term denoting ‘the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', and excludes the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands; British Isles is a geographical term which embraces the United Kingdom, the island of Ireland (ie including the Republic of Ireland), the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands; Britain is a term with no official status, and is generally used to refer either to Great Britain or to the United Kingdom. British means ‘relating to Britain', in either of the senses above.
