1. An infectious disease, mainly affecting cattle, in which it causes reduced milk yields, infertility and abortion of calves, and which is sometimes transmitted to humans, as undulant fever, by contact or by consumption of unpasteurized milk.

Etymology: 1930s: Latin, from Brucella the bacteria causing the disease (named after Sir David Bruce (1855‐1931), an Australian-born bacteriologist).
