    1. A member of the cattle family, native to S and E Africa, which has a heavy black or brown body, thick horns curving upwards at their tips, and large drooping ears.

    2. A member of the cattle family, native to SE Asia, the wild form of which has a black coat, although domesticated forms may also be grey, pink or white and are noted for their docility.
      Form: Indian buffalo (also)
    3. Sometimes used generally to refer to the American bison.
Etymology: 16c: Italian, or from Portuguese bufalo.
