    1. (formula C4H10) a colourless highly flammable gas belonging to the alkane series of hydrocarbon compounds, and used in the manufacture of synthetic rubber, and in liquid form as a fuel supply for portable stoves, etc.
Etymology: 19c: from butyric acid (which gives rancid butter its smell), from Latin butyrum butter.
