noun
    1. A major road which carries traffic on a route that avoids a city centre, town or congested area.
    2. medicine.
      The redirection of blood flow so as to avoid a blocked or diseased blood vessel, especially a coronary artery, usually by grafting a blood vessel taken from another part of the body.
    3. A channel or pipe, etc which carries gas or electricity, etc when the main channel is blocked or congested.
    4. An electrical circuit that carries current around one or more circuit components instead of through them.

    1. To avoid (a congested or blocked place) by taking a route which goes round or beyond it.
    2. To leave out or avoid (a step in a process), or ignore and not discuss something with (a person).
      Example: managed to bypass the usual selection procedure
