    1. A group of adjacent binary digits (see bit3) that are handled as a single unit, especially a group of eight bits representing one alphanumerical character or two decimal digits.
    2. The amount of storage space occupied by such a group.
Etymology: 1960s: possibly from binary digit eight, or from bit3.
