    1. A compound word or phrase, adopted into a language, whose parts are a literal translation of the corresponding parts of the phrase in the language it has been borrowed from, eg in English, superman is a calque of German Übermensch. Also called loan translation.
Etymology: 20c: French, meaning ‘copy', from calquer to trace a design.
