      A hypothetical force, resulting from the Earth's rotation, which appears to act on objects moving across the Earth's surface, deflecting their path to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere.
Etymology: 20c: named after the French physicist Gaspard Gustave de Coriolis (1792‐1843).
