    1. biochem.
      An amino acid derivative that plays an important role in the production of adrenalin and noradrenalin, and of the neurotransmitter dopamine, especially L-dopa which is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.
Etymology: Early 20c: from dihydroxyphenylalanine the chemical name for the compound.
