    1. The condition of happening often.
      Thesaurus: regularity, recurrence, prevalence, repetition, reiteration.
    2. The rate at which a happening, phenomenon, etc, recurs.
    3. physics.
      (SI unit hertz)a measure of the rate at which a complete cycle of wave motion is repeated per unit time.
    4. radio.
      The rate of sound waves per second at which a particular radio signal is sent out. See under very high frequency.
    5. statistics.
      The number of items, values, etc, that occur within a specified category, eg the number of students with a score of 90 to 100 in a class test may be five, so for that category the frequency is five.
Etymology: 17c in sense 1; 16c in obsolete sense ‘being crowded': from Latin frequens happening often.
