    1. The print or inked impression made by the pattern of minute swirling ridges on the surface of the end joints of the fingers and thumbs, which is unique to each person, and can be used as a means of identification, especially of criminals.
    2. Any accurate and unique identifying feature or characteristic, especially that produced by analysis of a sample of a person's DNA, using a technique known as DNA fingerprinting or genetic fingerprinting.
