      A crystalline form of quartz, found in chalk and limestone, consisting of hard dark-grey or black nodules encrusted with white, and used as an abrasive.
    2. archaeol.
      A trimmed piece of this used as a tool.
    3. A piece of a hard metal alloy from which a spark can be struck, eg in a cigarette-lighter.
