      Any of various compounds of carbon and fluorine that are highly resistant to heat and chemical action, and very stable over long periods, formerly widely used as aerosol propellants and refrigerants until recent concern about their damaging effect on the ozone layer. See also chlorofluorocarbon.
Etymology: 1930s: from fluorine + carbon, modelled on hydrocarbon.
