    1. A flow of matter; the act of flowing.
    2. Constant change; instability.
      Thesaurus: fluctuation, change, alteration, motion, movement, transition, mutability, fluidity; instability, chaos, unrest; Antonym: stability.
    3. Any substance added to another in order to aid the process of melting.
    4. In the smelting of metal ores: any substance that is added so that it will combine with impurities which can then be removed as a flowing mass of slag.
    5. Any substance, such as a resin, that is used to remove oxides from the surfaces of metals that are to be soldered, welded or brazed.
