1a. Any fine-grained stone, eg sandstone or limestone, that can be shaped easily for building without a tendency to split in layers;
1b. A slab of such stone.
2. A freestone fruit.

1. Said of certain types of eg peaches and nectarines: having a stone from which the flesh comes away easily when ripe. Compare clingstone.
