    1. Belonging, referring or relating to any member of a general class or group.
      Thesaurus: universal, general, common, wide, inclusive, collective, sweeping, blanket, comprehensive; bland, faceless; Antonym: particular, specific.
    2a. Said especially of a drug: not protected by a trademark and sold as a specific brand; non-proprietary;
      Example: generic aspirin
    2b. Applied to supermarket products: sold without a brand name.
    3. Applied to a product name that was originally a trademark, eg hoover, biro, etc: now used as the general name for the product.
    4. biol.
      Belonging, referring or relating to a genus.
    5. Said of computers, computer sofware, etc: belonging to the same family; interchangeable.
