      The statistical study of the vocabulary of two or more languages that are related, or thought to be related, in order to determine the extent to which their vocabulary can be said to be shared or similar and also to chart the chronology of their independent development.
Etymology: 1950s: from Greek glotta tongue or language + chronology.
