    1. The part of a vessel's bow in which the hawseholes are cut.
    2. A hawsehole.
    3. A hawsepipe.
    4. The distance between the head of an anchored vessel and the anchor itself.
    5. The position of the port and starboard anchor ropes when a vessel is moored with two anchors.
Etymology: 15c: originally halse, probably from Norse háls neck or ship's bow.
