    1. Having a related or similar function or position.
      Thesaurus: analogous, comparable, correspondent, equivalent, like, matching, related, similar; Antonym: different, dissimilar.
    2. biol.
      Said of plant or animal structures: having a common origin, but having evolved in such a way that they no longer perform the same functions or resemble each other, eg a human arm and a bird's wing. Compare analogous.
    3. genetics.
      Said of two chromosomes in a cell, usually of the same size and shape: pairing during meiosis, and containing genes for the same set of characteristics, but derived from different parents.
