    1. entomol.
      The final stage in the life cycle of an insect, when it is a sexually mature adult.
    2. psychol.
      A mental, often idealized, view of another person, formed in childhood (eg a child's image of its mother), that persists in a person's subconscious and influences their adult life.
Etymology: 18c; early 20c in sense 2: Latin, meaning ‘image' or ‘likeness'.
