ink

    1. A liquid, or sometimes a paste or powder, consisting of a pigment or a dye, used for writing, drawing or printing on paper and other materials. See also Indian ink.
    2. biol.
      A dark liquid ejected by certain cephalopods, such as octopus and squid, to confuse predators by decreasing visibility.
verb inked, inking
    1. To mark something with ink.
    2. To cover (a surface to be printed) with ink.
Etymology: 13c: from French enque, from Latin encaustum a purplish-red ink used by Roman emperors.
