      Any protective outer layer of tissue covering a body part, organ, etc, eg the epidermis of the skin in vertebrates or the cuticle or exoskeleton of insects.
    2. bot.
      Either of the two protective outer coats that surrounds the ovule in angiosperms or the one outer coat that surrounds the ovule in gymnosperms.
