    1. To make an appeal to (God, some deity, a Muse, authority, etc) for help, support or inspiration.
      Thesaurus: appeal to, call upon, request, entreat, beg, send for, summon, bid.
    2. To appeal to (a law, principle, etc) as an authority or reason for eg one's behaviour.
    3. To make an earnest appeal for (help, support, inspiration, etc).
    4. To conjure up (a spirit) by reciting a spell.
    5. To put (a law, decision, etc) into effect. See also invocation.
