      In vertebrates: small groups of specialized cells scattered throughout the pancreas, which control the level of glucose in the blood by secreting the hormones insulin and glucagon.
Etymology: 19c: named after the German anatomist Paul Langerhans who, in 1869, was the first person to describe them.
