    1. A resinous substance produced by certain tropical Asian insects and deposited on the twigs of various trees, used to make varnish, especially shellac, as well as sealing wax, abrasives and a red dye.
Etymology: 16c: from Hindi lakh 100000, because of the vast numbers of insects required for the production of small quantities of the substance.
