    1. anatomy.
      A thin sheet or plate of tissue, especially one of the many thin layers of which compact bone is formed.
    2. bot.
      Any of the thin sheet-like membranes that are present within the chloroplasts of plant cells.
    3. biol.
      Any of the vertical spore-bearing structures or gills that radiate outwards from the stalk on the underside of the cap of a mushroom or toadstool. Also called gill.
