    1. A bacterium sometimes found in certain foods, eg chicken and soft cheese, which if not killed in cooking may cause the serious disease listeriosis, which can cause death or miscarriage.
Etymology: 1940: named after Joseph Lister (1827‐1912), British surgeon and pioneer of antiseptics.
